Frequently Asked Questions about destination workshops:
Puerto Vallarta FAQ
Why Mexico? Have you spent much time in Canada in March?
Will the courses qualify for CEUs/CECs? For Ontario RMTs the courses are all designed to be compatible the CMTO's new Education Plan program.
For BC RMTs, yes, the courses are pre-approved for CECs.
How do I get to Mexico? You're responsible for your own travel and accommodation. WestJet, Air Canada and a bunch of charter airlines have direct flights many days of the week from Toronto.
Where should I stay? The workshops will be held at the Boana Torre Malibu condominium building in a private penthouse suite. This building is located in the "Zona Romantica" or old town part of Vallarta. There are many, many hotels (Tropicana, San Marino and more) within walking distance of the workshop. You can also consider staying in downtown Vallarta, but once get into Norte or Neuevo Vallarta you're starting to look at a longer commute.
Which website is best for booking travel? Please use the website you feel most comfortable with. For flights (only) I'm very fond of google.ca/flights.
Is the beach safe for swimming? Define "safe". It's a great beach, but I'm going to be honest and say that the waves can be a little strong at times. Early morning is the best time for swimming. Later in the day the waves can knock you off your feet. Luckily there's usually no rip tides or undertow. Unfortunately body surfing is not recommended because the waves tend to dump rather than break.
NICARAGUA FAQ
When is the next trip to Nicaragua? March, 2020, Details will be posted middle of 2019
How do I register? You can use the registration panel and pay by credit card (via PayPal, but a PayPal account is NOT necessary).
Where? Probably a combination of Grenada, on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island and Salinas Grandes on the Pacific coast.
How do I get there? You're responsible for your own travel to and from Nicaragua.
When does the van leave/return? Details to come.
What meals are included? Details to come.
What courses will you be offering?Details to come.
What is there to do in the area? Details to come.
Stargazing? Unless you're on your honeymoon, the simple best thing to do after dinner is to head up to the roof and pick out your favourite constellations. There is almost zero light pollution in the area so you are going to see more stars than the red carpet on Oscar night.
What's the beach like? Deserted, clean, and a shell collectors dream. More suited to surfing than swimming. Fine for playing in the waves, but not so much for swimming distances.
GENERAL
Will it rain? There are some things even I have no control over.
Can I write off the trip as a business expense? An accountant is the best source for this information, but the answer is usually yes. It will depend a bit on your income and other expenses. Revenue Canada allows deductions for two conferences a year, so why not make this one of them? It makes my accountant very happy when I travel because he says I don't have enough expenses. When was the last time you made your accountant happy?
Do I need special clothing or equipment for Massage Therapy in Water? No, but there are a number of things you should consider. Sunscreen is a must for spending that much time in the ocean and pool. You may also want to consider wearing water clothing such as wicking or polypropolene tops with long sleeves. Floppy hats are a good idea, as well as sunglasses. I supply the flotation equipment used in the course but if you have room in your luggage you can supplement it by bringing a pool noodle cut into two or three equal pieces.
Any other trips planned for 2019? I barely know what I'll be doing tomorrow, but I generally plan workshop trips about six months in advance. Feel free to do the planning for me if there's a trip you're dying to do.
How about a cruise? Well it's funny you should ask, because I get asked that a lot, and I'm open to it. But that's gonna take some planning, so why not come to Vancouver, Vegas or maybe Dominican and tell me all about your cruising experiences.
Will you come to my town to hold a workshop? Probably yes! Especially if you have clinic space we can use to hold the classes. Email or call to ask. I'm always up for a road trip.
